Dead to Me

Jen (Christina Applegate) begins attending a grief support group after her husband is killed in a hit-and-run vehicle accident. There, she meets Judy (Linda Cardellini), an eccentric free spirit who, despite their polar opposite dispositions, quickly becomes a good friend. (Judy is a cheerful optimist, whereas Jen is more akin to a raging tornado.) What Jen doesn’t realize is that Judy is the hit-and-run driver. Judy knows her friendship-destroying lies can’t remain buried for long as Jen’s obsession with uncovering her husband’s killer deepens.   

Derry Girls 

In this endearing teen sitcom, five friends — Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn) — navigate their adolescent years during the Troubles in 1990s Northern Ireland. The group attends a Catholic girls’ high school (yes, including James) and finds themselves in one absurd circumstance after another under the watchful eye of their dry-humored headmistress, Sister Michael (Siobhán McSweeney). Insecure 

Based on the critically acclaimed web series Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae, this satirical dramedy explores the joys, subtleties, and unpleasant situations of modern-day Black women. We meet Issa (Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji), college best friends who are now twentysomethings in Los Angeles aiming for success in their professions and love lives. Molly is a corporate lawyer, whereas Issa works for a non-profit. Molly struggles on the LA dating scene as Issa seeks to rekindle her smoldering romance with long-term boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis). But, given their quick chemistry and all-or-nothing commitment to one another, the friendship between the show’s two heroes is the one you’ll pull for the most.

Meanwhile, its outstanding cast’s grounded performances (Andrea Navedo, Ivonne Coll, Jaime Camil, Yael Grobglas, Anthony Mendez) help you buy into every gloriously ludicrous moment.

The Emmy-nominated ITYSL is the program for you if you enjoy basking in (or grimacing at) the most ludicrous scenarios. This coming-of-age comedy from Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher is honest, clever, and partially based on Kaling’s own experiences as an Indian-American high school student. Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a 15-year-old girl, faces her sophomore year after her father dies of a heart attack and she loses use of her legs for three months as a result of the trauma. What’s on her schedule now that school is back in session? Her grand ambitions include “rebranding” herself and her two best pals, brainiac Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) and thespian Eleanor (Ramona Young), by gaining a man and a social status rise. It’s much easier to admit that adolescence has a lot to giggle about once you’ve passed through it.  

Seinfeld  

The legendary “show about nothing” sits toward the top of most “best of” comedy lists. Seinfeld plays a fictionalized version of himself living and performing stand-up in New York in this creation of real-life comedians Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld. The show frequently alternates between scenes from Jerry’s set and his chaotic city life. In both situations, his three closest friends, the neurotic George Costanza (Jason Alexander), the fiery Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and the goofy Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards), provide some of the best fodder.
