Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 – Disney’s superhero tentpole was expected to earn $130 million to $140 million abroad as the weekend approached. Estimates were raised up by Sunday due to great word-of-mouth. Even better, Monday’s final number exceeded Sunday’s forecasts of $282 million globally and 168 million globally. That’s excellent news, since the summer movie season is only going to get more competitive with the release of “Fast X” and “The Little Mermaid” later this month.
The finale to Marvel’s trilogy about a band of interplanetary misfits grossed $114 million in North America, ranking as the second-biggest domestic opening weekend of the year, trailing only “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($146 million).
In other markets, “Vol. 3” had the best start ($28.1 million), followed by the United Kingdom ($14.7 million), Korea ($13.6 million), Mexico ($13 million), and France ($8.2 million). The comic book picture exceeded expectations in China, which is traditionally a significant market for Marvel but has been increasingly wary of most Hollywood films, with the exception of “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3
The latest “Guardians of the Galaxy” picture, the 32nd in the huge Marvel Cinematic Universe, was notably successful in Imax, accounting for $25 million in global ticket sales. This is Imax’s largest global opening of the year.
“James Gunn and our Marvel and Disney partners relied heavily on Imax technology to deliver a visually stunning and emotionally moving conclusion to this iconic franchise,” says Imax CEO Rich Gelfond. “We anticipate that the strong audience response will result in a long, successful run at the box office.”
In terms of worldwide ticket sales, the first two “Guardians” films were strong performers. The first “Guardians of the Galaxy” film, released in 2014, grossed $439 million overseas and $773 million globally, while the sequel grossed $473 million internationally and $863 million globally.
James Gunn returned to develop and direct “Vol. 3,” his final Marvel film before taking over at rival comic book publisher DC Studios. The touching story
