New York Fashion Week by Helmut Lang and Ralph Lauren

New York Fashion Week – With giants Ralph Lauren and Helmut Lang returning to the industry’s premier event with new ideas, New York kicked up its Spring-Summer 2024 Fashion Week on Friday, under stifling heat and anxiety over the Hollywood strike.

Coach, an American luxury company, debuted its collection of sensual translucent gowns on Thursday at the New York Public Library in Manhattan, but the event was temporarily disrupted by animal rights protestors.

While Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Jennifer Lopez were watching the show, two female PETA protesters — one covered in body paint that resembled animal flaying and another holding a poster that read “Coach: Leather Kills” — joined the models on the runway before being led away by security.

Victoria’s Secret teased a film meant to showcase the brand’s new and more inclusive identity after it was criticized for designing garments that objectify women at another unofficial kick-off event on Wednesday, featuring Naomi Campbell, Doja Cat, Naomi Osaka, and Gigi Hadid.

The documentary, dubbed “The Victoria’s Secret World Tour,” will be broadcast on Amazon Prime at the end of September and will feature the work of innovators and artists from Lagos, London, Bogota, and Tokyo.

This year’s New York Fashion Week will include newcomers as well as heavyweights including Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Altuzarra, Gabriela Hearst, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, and Luar.

Helmut Lang, the designer, departed fashion in 2005, but the brand lives on, having been purchased by Prada and subsequently by the Japanese conglomerate Fast Retailing, which owns Uniqlo.

The company is now returning to the New York runways with a collection designed by its new artistic director, Peter Do, who is widely regarded as a fashion prodigy.

The show featured nostalgic undertones, a nod to the 1990s when it became the first fashion company to advertise on yellow taxi signals in New York.

Ralph Lauren, the renowned company that defined American elegance and personified preppy US style with an annual turnover of more than $6 billion, made its comeback on Friday, although in Brooklyn, where many fashion shows have gone.

Since 2019, the company, whose creator was born in the Bronx, has not held a show in New York.

The joint strike of Hollywood screenwriters and actresses seeking greater pay has cut the number of red carpet previews to a bare minimum, depriving marketers of the opportunity to dress stars and promote themselves in the process.

“Certainly, the red carpet is a way to speak to the audience,” Kolb said, adding that fashion displays were crucial as well.

“Content that they create for social channels will contribute to a very loud, very visible Fashion Week,” he says.
